Top 10 Movies from the 90's

Updated on October 29, 2014

My Top 10 Favorite Movies from the 90's - Want to Reminisce with Me?

I recently started reminiscing about older movies that I used to enjoy growing up. I then realized that most, if not all of these were made in the 90's! So I decided to share my list with everyone. Reminisce with me!

Now, keep in mind, these movies are not necessarily all Blockbusters and during the 90's I was a girl between ages 6 and 15, just to give you a little context. And for the movies that are a little risque, I obviously didn't watch them right when they came out in the movie theaters...mom and dad were pretty strict about that. :)

I created this list by asking myself these questions, "Which movies would I be really excited to see again?" "Which movies do I never mind watching over and over?" "Which movies give me that warm, fuzzy feeling?"

So, with no further ado, I present to you my list of favorite movies from the 90's!

10. Scream (1996) - Favorite Movie Quote: "Never, ever, ever under any circumstances say, 'I'll be right back.' Because you won't be back."

When in comes to scary movies, I'm usually a big old chicken and avoid them at all costs. However, Scream was the first movie in the Horror genre, that I actually enjoyed! I remember the first time watching this movie, I was sitting on the floor with all of my friends eating Halloween candy.

I recommend Scream to those who are like me; not really horror movie fans, but looking for something different to watch. I enjoyed Scream because there is actually a story line and the characters keep the movie interesting. This movie also has elements of suspense that keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie.

A movie reviewer on IMDb describes the movie as "written in a way that deceived and tricked and had you jumping out of your seats but also laughing at the paradoxical black humor." I couldn't agree more!"

I found this special edition that includes the original Scream movie, PLUS Scream 2, Scream 3, Still Screaming, and Scream: The Inside Story. A perfect combo for those of you who loved this movie as much as I did!

9. American Pie (1999) - Favorite Movie Quote: "We'll just tell your mother that... we ate it all."

I first watched American Pie a few years after it came out since I wasn't old enough to go see it in the theater and the content of the movie is geared towards older teen and adult humor. However, once I did see this movie, I couldn't stop laughing! I'm usually not one for stupid humor, however, American Pie is a totally unpredictable movie with hilariously shocking incidents.

I would recommend this movie to those over the age of 18 who enjoy raunchy comedies. I think some of the comedy would be lost on anyone younger. (Not to mention, this movie would probably be inappropriate for younger ages as well.) The fantastic cast members just add value to the movie. I have seen all of the other movies within the American Pie series and not a single one disappoints, but will never live up to the first!

A movie reviewer on IMDb states, "With some truly hilarious characters and some terrific dialogue, this film will have you in stitches, and contains scenes that will be laughed about for years." Looking for your next raunchy comedy to rent? American Pie won't disappoint!

This 4 film collection of the American Pie series of movies is just too good to be true. I absolutely LOVED every single one of these movies and they make me laugh hysterically every time I watch them. This collection includes the original American Pie, American Pie 2, American Wedding, and American Reunion. All kinds of goodness in one tiny package!

8. Can't Hardly Wait (1998) - Favorite Movie Quote: "Oh I'm the weird one? You're the one calling Barry Mannilow from a phone booth at 2:00 am!"

Can't Hardly Wait is one of those mindless movies to watch that is fun to kick back to and just have a good laugh. As a kid in high school, I found this movie very entertaining and Seth Green's character is hilarious.

I would recommend Can't Hardly Wait for teenagers or adults who enjoy those good old teen party comedies from the 90's. There are several cast members who made a debut in this movie and went on to have bigger roles later on, so its definitely fun watching them in their pre-fame years.

A movie reviewer from IMDb recommends Can't Hardly Wait "if you're looking for something fun, lighthearted and upbeat."

  • Lauren Ambrose. You may have also seen her in Six Feet Under or Wanderlust.

Can't Hardly Wait - 10 Year Reunion Edition is Available on Amazon

I was so excited when I stumbled across this new edition for one of my favorite 90's movies. This edition was released 10 years after the movie was released and includes some really cool extras and features! The ones I'm the most excited about are the deleted scenes and interviews with the cast 10 years later. Definitely a great buy for anyone who is a 90's kid like me!

7. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) - Favorite Movie Quote: "Locksley. I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!"

I have always been somewhat fascinated with all of the Robin Hood stories. When I was younger, I used to love the Disney version. I remember the first time I watched Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, it was on a family movie night. Mom and Dad love their action movies.

For those of you out there who also enjoy all tales relating to Robin Hood, I recommend watching this version, I guarantee it won't disappoint! To this day, I still prefer this version of Robin Hood, out of all of the other movies made. I love the action and the way the story is told, mixed in with humor in all of the right places. I also find this version more whimsical that others and am fascinated by the little village built in the trees of the Haunted Forest.

A reviewer on Amazon couldn't have described this movie better, "I grew up with this movie, and it is one of my all time favorites! It's got action, humor, and of course a love story...I absolutely love this movie and the music in it is the best!"

I found out there is an extended version for my favorite rendition of Robin Hood. This includes an extra disc with a behind the scenes documentary, cast interviews, and many more interesting tidbits. One of my favorite movies just got a whole lot more interesting!

6. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Favorite Movie Quote: "I'd like to think that the last thing that went through his head, other than that bullet, was to won

I first watched The Shawshank Redemption many years after it's initial release. After reading Stephen King's novella, Rita Hayworth, I decided to watch the movie and I was not disappointed! So many books that are made into movies don't turn out well, but this movie is one of the exceptions. The Shawshank Redemption is one of those movies that I've seen over and over again, yet I enjoy it every single time.

I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys prison dramas and movies that send a positive message. The theme of this movie is hope. The Shawshank Redepmption is shot from the unique perspective of the prison inmates and is done is such a way that the viewer looks at them as the "good guys." This is just is one of the many reasons this movie is unlike many...that and the great performances by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

A movie reviewer on IMDb states, "Shawshank encompasses friendships, hardships, hopes, and dreams. And what is so great about the movie is that it moves you, it gives you hope." If that doesn't inspire you to watch this flick, I don't know what will!

  • Tim Robbins. You may have also seen him in Top Gun, War of the Worlds, or Green Lantern.
  • Bob Gunton. You may have also seen him in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Demolition Man, or Patch Adams.

5. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) - Favorite Movie Quote: "My insurance does not cover PMS!"

10 Things I Hate About You is one of my all time favorite "feel good" movies. It was this movie that introduced me to Heath Ledger, who became and still is, one of my favorite actors. I also, jokingly, relate to the story somewhat, and like to compare myself as a teenager to the main character, Kat Stratford, an angry feminist, and my sister to her younger sister, Bianca Stratford, the somewhat ditzy, popular girl in school. Much like the sisters in the movie, my sister and I were always at each other's throats when growing up due to our polar opposite personalities.

I would definitely recommend 10 Things I Hate About You to those who enjoy Teen Romantic Comedies. There is a perfect splash of comedy and romance in this movie, creating optimum enjoyment. As a side note, the soundtrack for this movie absolutely rocks!

A reviewer on Amazon writes that after watching 10 Things I Hate About You, "I was completely blown away. The movie was nothing as I had expected it would be. The plot was so much better than all of those other teenage movies. This movie has everything: a good script, hysterical jokes, great acting, even a good soundtrack." Have I enticed you to watch this movie fave of mine yet?

  • Larisa Oleynik. You may have also seen her in The Secret Life of Alex Mack, 100 Girls, or A Time for Dancing.

4. Armageddon (1998) - Favorite Movie Quote: "Houston, you have a problem. You see, I promised my little girl that I'd be comin' home. Now I don't know what you

Armageddon is my absolute favorite movie in the Action/Science Fiction genre. This movie is one of very few movies that makes me cry each and every time. It's just that powerful.

I would recommend Armageddon for men and women alike. There are aspects of action, suspense, romance, and comedy, all balled up into one great movie. I think I like it so much because the story is told in such a way that you fall in love with the characters and feel like you are going through their struggles and triumphs right along with them.

A movie reviewer on Amazon deems Armageddon "...one of my favorite movies of all time. There are very few movies that even try to touch on almost every emotion and this one does it well in my opinion." If you're game for an entertaining, emotional roller coaster ride, give this movie a try!

  • Liv Tyler. You may have also seen her in That Thing You Do, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, or The Incredible Hulk.

Get Armageddon on Blu-Ray from Amazon

Armageddon is so jam packed with action and special effects that Blu-Ray quality viewing definitely does the movie justice. Along with all of the action and explosions, viewing Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis in Blu-Ray isn't hard on the eyes either...

3. Drop Dead Fred (1991) - Favorite Movie Quote: " Snotface, look... INK - let's write something on the carpet... I know how 'bout 'Mother SUCKS'."

Drop Dead Fred holds a dear place in my heart. Its one of those movies that I loved as a child and still love as an adult. The obnoxious humor from Rik Mayall is what makes this movie. There are hilarious "one liners" from Drop Dead Fred that I absolutely love, and still quote, even to this day.

I would recommend this movie for older children in their early teens or for adults who enjoy the comedy/fantasy genre. Drop Dead Fred can only be described as a sort of Cult Classic and have heard that a remake is in progress, due to come out in 2014.

An Amazon movie reviewer advises, "Watch it, it will make you laugh, it will make you smile, and it will make you chuckle.... what more can you ask?" Do I have you convinced yet? At least watch it before the remake!

  • Phoebe Cates. You may have also seen her in Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Gremlins.

Find Drop Dead Fred on eBay

After doing some searching, I discovered that one of the best movies of all time is now rare and hard to find on DVD! The best selection and deal I found was on eBay. If you don't have a copy of this touching, yet hilarious movie, you may want to purchase one before they become impossible to find!

2. Son in Law (1993) - Favorite Movie Quote: "Chickens! You guys have chickens? I love chickens! Are they extra crispy or original recipe?"

In my opinion, the movie Son in Law is great in large part, due to Pauly Shore . I remember first watching this movie on a stormy night in my friend's camper on VHS. And oh did we laugh! Son in Law is one of those movies that stands the test of time and is still hilarious with every single viewing.

I would recommend this movie to anybody who enjoys a good comedy. Son in Law will have you chuckling time and time again at Pauly Shore's ridiculous antics. However, this movie is also a "feel good" movie with a good story line as well and is full of that good old 90's fashion.

A movie reviewer on IMDb describes Son in Law as "one of our all time family favorites. When we need a laugh...we just put this one in and laugh all way thru like it is the first time we've seen it." Next time you need a good laugh, check out Son in Law.

  • Pauly Shore. You may have also seen him in Encino Man, In the Army Now, or Bio-Dome.
  • Carla Gugino. You may have also seen her in Snake Eyes, Watchmen, or Mr. Popper's Penguins.
  • Lane Smith. You may have also seen him in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, My Cousin Vinny, or The Mighty Ducks.
  • Tiffani Thiessen. You may have also seen her in Saved By the Bell, Beverly Hills 90210, or White Collar.

Rent Son in Law on Amazon Prime

Why wait for a DVD to arrive when you can watch Pauly Shore's comedic genius at the click of a button? Of course, the DVD is available on Amazon as well, but sometimes you just need to indulge in some instant gratification, right? ESPECIALLY when it comes to this movie!

1. Now and Then (1995) - Favorite Movie Quote: "Things will happen in your life that you can't stop. But that's no reason to shut out the world."

Now and Then is my absolute favorite movie of all time. i know it may seem like a strange choice. I'm sure the reason I love this movie so much is partially due to the nostalgia as well as the movie itself. As a pre-teen, I enjoyed this coming of age drama/comedy because the characters just draw you in and are relatable. I can even relate to the characters now as Now and Then is about looking back on one's childhood. (In my early teens, I was absolutely in love with Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci was my favorite actress, which just added to my infatuation with this movie.)

I would recommend this movie for families with children in the pre-teen to early teen years. It is a great family movie! I know I have mentioned "feel good" movies in my previous reviews, however, in my opinion, Now and Then is the ULTIMATE "feel good" movie, complemented by the All Star cast. Now and Then also offers a great message which is stated above in my favorite movie quote.

An Amazon movie reviewer relates to Now and Then as well, and states, "I found this film inspiring and insightful, but then I came from the same generation so I can totally relate. So I watch it every now and then for the sweetness and the memories of a great childhood." If you haven't seen Now and Then, I definitely recommend giving it a try!

  • Christina Ricci. You may have also seen her in Casper, Sleepy Hollow, or Monster.
  • Rosie O'Donnell. You may have also seen her in A League of Their Own, The Flintstones, or The Rosie O'Donnell Show.
  • Thora Birch. You may have also seen her in American Beauty, Ghost World, or Patriot Games.
  • Melanie Griffith. You may have also seen her in Working Girl, Milk Money, or Lolita.
  • Gaby Hoffmann. You may have also seen her in Uncle Buck, Field of Dreams, or Volcano.
  • Demi Moore. You may have also seen her in Ghost, A Few Good Men, or G.I. Jane.
  • Rita Wilson. You may have also seen her in Sleepless in Seattle, Runaway Bride, or Jingle All the Way.
  • Devon Sawa. You may have also seen him in Little Giants, Wild America, or Final Destination.

You Can Find "Now and Then" on Amazon on DVD

While this movie isn't available on Blu-Ray, since it's a coming of age story and not an action movie, I don't think Blu-Ray would have added a lot of extra viewing pleasure anyway. I still think this is the best movie that came out of the 90's and definitely have my own personal copy to watch whenever I like at home.
